  • The Crookston boys' golf team had 18 guys in action Wednesday with 12 playing at the Detroit Lakes Invitational at Wildflower Golf Course in Detroit Lakes and six playing at the Fertile-Beltrami/Red Lake Falls (F-B/RLF) Invitational at Sandhill River Golf Course and Oak Knolls Golf Club.
"It was good to have a pile of kids play," Pirate head coach Steve Kofoed said. "Some played in their first varsity meet of their careers. It's nice to get 18 guys with scores."
At the F-B/RLF Meet, senior Wyatt Hanson continued his stellar play, shooting a 72 and tying for medalist honors with Blayke Nelson of Warroad. The Pirates finished runner-up, four strokes behind Warroad. Junior Brady Heppner also broke 80 with a 79, while senior Curtis Regan carded an 82 and senior Isaac Morales shot an 89 to make of the team score.
"It was nice to see both Brady and Wyatt under 80," coach Kofoed said. "Wyatt sounded like he hit the ball really well. He didn't putt really well and was a little shaky with irons. It's early but it's good to see him continue getting better with every tournament. Hopefully when he plays again on Saturday he keeps getting better."
At Detroit Lakes freshman Doug Larson led the Pirates with an 80 as Crookston's top team finished fifth. Eighth grader Dane Anderson carded an 82, while freshman Isaac Westlake had an 87 and freshman Ian Johnson shot an 89 to round out the team score. Eighth grader Charles Eickhof led the other Pirate team with an 86 to place ninth. Freshman Parker Nicholls  and eighth grader Ethan Christopherson each shot a 92, while sophomore Michael Tate carded a 106.
"Both Doug and Dane had opportunities to break 80," coach Kofoed said. "Doug had a few spots with mental mistakes and got away with it. He had a couple botched up and downs with two chips, but those are course management types of things. He lipped out on the last hole to miss out on a 79. He is obviously one of those guys we'll be counting on to shoot in the 70s.

"Dane shot a 75 at Minakwa on Saturday," Kofoed noted. "You can definitely tell he's playing well. He was moving quick the last four or five holes. Dane was disappointed on the way he finished but it's good to see him continue playing well."
Crookston will compete at the Thief River Falls Invitational Friday at Thief River Golf Club and the Roseau Invitational Saturday at Oak Crest Golf Course.
