The Pirate boys' golf team competed in the Pre-Section Tournament at Long Bow Golf Club in Walker Wednesday and finished fourth of eight teams behind a 76 from senior Wyatt Hanson.
Individually, Hanson finished in seventh place, five strokes behind medalist Ben Mallow of Detroit Lakes.
The Lakers claimed four of the top five individual spots and ran away with first place as a team.
Senior Curtis Regan carded an 82 for the Pirates, while junior Brady Heppner shot an 83. The Crookston team score of 328 was rounded out by an 87 from either Dane Anderson or Zach Markovich, both eighth graders. Freshman Doug Larson recorded a 93.
"We improved a little bit from what we had this weekend," Pirate head coach Steve Kofoed said. "We are definitely not where we want to be or where we need to be at the end of the season. We had slight improvement and that's what looking for."
Hanson knows Long Bow well, playing there since he was a freshman.
"Wyatt has played well at Long Bow since he was a freshman and shot 77 and missed going to state by a couple strokes," coach Kofoed said. "He battled back today on the back nine to shoot 37. He finished with a birdie on the last hole.
"Curtis improved from the weekend," Kofoed continued. "He chunked a couple wedges and had a few three putts but he's making better contact. Curtis did some things much better.
"Brady bounced back from Saturday," Kofoed said. "The five par fives are what separates us from DL. Brady was +6 on par fives. My guess is DL is playing those under par.
"The younger guys, it was the first competitive round for Dane, Zach and Doug," Kofoed said. "Dane and Zach were up and down all the way through. Doug's short game was not very good at all. It was his first round of the year."
The Pirates will look to keep improving Friday at the East Grand Forks Invitational at Valley Golf Club.
