Wyatt Hanson carded a 82 and 78 at the Fargo North Invitational
The Pirate boys' golf team opened its season Friday and Saturday at the Fargo North Invitational, which was played at Pebble Lake Golf Club in Fergus Falls. Crookston finished tied for 11th out of 16 teams
Senior Wyatt Hanson tied for 13th individually with a two-day score of 160 (82-78) at the par 72 course.
The Pirates posted team scores (top four scores each day) of 350 and 336 to finish 65 strokes behind two-time Section 8AA champion Detroit Lakes, which won the invite.
Junior Brady Heppner (86-89) and freshman Isaac Westlake (93-82) each finished with scores of 175, while senior Curtis Regan posted a 176 (89-87). Sophomore Ryan Porter finished with a 186 (97-89) and eighth grader Ethan Christopherson carded a 189 (96-93).
"The biggest thing was to get out and play," Pirate head coach Steve Kofoed said. "I don't know if anyone is extremely satisfied with how they started the season. Isaac Westlake had a solid tournament. He got the ball up and down Saturday with five one putts and hit a lot of greens in regulation.
"Wyatt is satisfied, especially with how he finished," coach Kofoed continued. "He lipped out on last hole for birdie from 15 feet and missed a four footer for birdie on seven. So he could've been even lower."
The Pirates were happy just to be out on a golf course for the first time this season.
"The course was definitely in good enough shape," Kofoed said. "In all my seven years coaching we've had maybe two or three of these invites actually at Edgewood, Fargo North's home course. I knew we'd be able to find a place to play though. The grounds crew did a great job getting the course ready and there were kids out here helping to get it ready too.
"We were happy to be out and playing," Kofoed continued. "It would have been nice to be a little bit better score-wise. Brady Heppner was a little bit disappointed. Everyone's short game, we need to get out on the course and work on it.
"Hopefully Monday at Minakwa we can get out and do some chipping and putting," Kofoed said. "We have work to do with the fact we were 60-whatever strokes behind Detroit Lakes. And we have a busy week this week. That's the way it will be the rest of the season."
The Pirates are set to participate in the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Invitational Wednesday at Long Bow Golf Club.
