Aaron Hollcraft pitches a 3-hit, complete-game shut out vs. Roseau

The Pirate baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season with 15-14 and 10-0 wins over Roseau Tuesday at Jim Karn Field in Crookston.

Senior Kyle Proulx pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief in game one to get the win, while sophomore Aaron Hollcraft pitched a complete-game shut out.

"It was a very good night for the Pirates," said Pirate head coach Ted Hasz. "The first game we had to really battle to find a way to win. We had trouble finding the strike zone for a little bit. But good teams find a way to win.

"In the second game we dominated with Aaron (Hollcraft) on the hill and we were hitting well," Hasz continued. "We did not have an error either. Two errors in 13 innings, I can live with that most nights."

With a sharp, brisk wind and cool temperatures the fans were chilly but the Pirates did not let that bother them.

"I told the guys before the games, 'it is unacceptable to be cold tonight,'" Hasz said. "'Do what you have to do to be warm.' I think the guys took that to heart. They did what they had to do to stay warm. Usually it is hard to hit on a cold day but we sure hit some hard shots tonight."

The Pirates will now host the Jim Karn Memorial Showcase Friday and Saturday. Crookston will face Hibbing Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and St. Cloud Cathedral at 6 p.m.

"With four section wins we can't be any better," Hasz said. "We are excited but at the same time we have to get better every day. We are not where we need to be. We want to be peaking at the end of the year and playing our best at the end of the season in about a month."

Game one
Leading 11-4 going into the bottom of the fourth, Crookston looked to be in complete control against Roseau but, like most high school baseball games, no lead is safe.

Roseau posted a nine-run fourth inning and led 14-12 going into the seventh inning before Crookston rallied with three runs for the win.

Proulx helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBI. Hollcraft was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while junior Parker Epema was 2-for-4 with two runs. Senior Brandon Kresl finished 1-for-5 with two RBI.

Senior Josh Edlund started on the mound for the Pirates and lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight earned runs, ten total, on four hits and seven walks. Sophomore Seth Desrosier did not record an out while allowing three earned runs. Proulx came in and pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing one earned runs on three hits and two walks, while striking out three. Hollcraft closed out the game with a walk and three strike outs in one inning.

Alex Strand suffered the loss on the mound for Roseau, allowing three runs in the seventh inning.

Game two
Hollcraft pitched a three-hit complete-game shut out for his second win of the season. He walked three and struck out 11 in another solid performance. He also helped himself, going 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.

Edlund went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, while Kresl went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Crookston scored two runs in each of the second and third innings, then added four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to finish out the 10-0 win.
