An attorney for the New Ulm Medical Center and Allina Health System says an emergency room doctor followed regular standards of care when treating a man who collapsed and died at the ER in 2006.
The care of 45-year-old Verlyn Buls is the subject of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by his relatives in Brown County. Attorney Lindsay Arthur says the doctor measured Buls' heart beat and checked other vital signs when he arrived in the ER. Arthur says Buls failed to tell physicians about chest pains he had recently been experiencing.
Several doctors testified for the plaintiffs Tuesday saying that more should have been done to evaluate Buls. Cardiologist Jeffrey Breall testified an electrocardiogram should have been ordered.
The Journal says an autopsy showed Buls died of an irregular heart beat with coronary artery disease.
