  • City officials say a costly environment review won't be needed for the proposed new ballpark for the St. Paul Saints.
The city said Tuesday an environmental assessment worksheet has been completed on the $54 million project. That effectively clears the way for construction of the 7,000-seat ballpark in Lowertown.
The report from Braun Intertec determined that a more costly environmental impact statement will not be necessary. The Metropolitan Council also reviewed the assessment and declined to call for further study.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports a parking analysis conducted by the city and the TKDA engineering firm found more than 7,500 parking spaces in walking distance of the proposed ballpark.
Demolition is expected to begin this summer, with the Saints throwing out the opening pitch in spring 2015.
