  • Construction crews are expected to begin construction this month on the first phase of an $80 million expansion of Essentia Health's Fargo hospital.
The project's first phase includes a new wing with a four-story 105,000-square-foot tower at the hospital's current location that's slated for completion in January 2015, KVLY television reported (http://nbcnews.to/11w5fbC ).
A 25,000-square-foot support services building will be added south and west of the hospital.
Hospital officials say the current 105-bed facility operates at a high capacity every day and more patients are demanding services.
"We've invested $50 million quietly in this region building our infrastructure and what has resulted from that is that we have hit our cap of what this campus can support," said Greg Glasner, Essentia Health's chief medical officer. "Our 85 percent occupancy at midnight generally means 100-plus percent occupancy during the day, every day."
Second-phase construction will begin in January 2014 on a two-story, 20,000-square-foot facility offering specialty clinic space. The hospital is still deciding which departments will move to this location. The building is scheduled for completion in March 2015.
The third phase begins in December 2014, with the expansion of the hospital's current Emergency Department, operating rooms and imaging services. It will expand the hospital's footprint and allow the Emergency Department to grow from 13 treatment rooms to 26. This work is expected to extend to early 2016.
