April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This month and throughout the year, Polk County Child Abuse Prevention Council is encouraging all individuals and organizations to play a role in making Polk County a better place for children and families.

By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, the PCCAPC can help promote children's social and emotional well-being and prevent child maltreatment within families and communities.

They are asking all Polk County residents the following question, "What one thing can you do to create a more peaceful Polk County?"

This year, the PCCAPC is giving the opportunity for businesses to join in Walking the Talk by participating in a shoe decorating challenge open to all Crookston businesses. Displays can be made up of cowboy boots, heels, flip flops and other kinds and can be new or used. Any amount of shoes can be used. The shoes have to be incorporated in a unique tag line demonstrating the theme of "What One Thing Can You Do to Create a More Peaceful Polk County and Help to End Child Abuse?" The other contest rules are that the businesses must show the provided poster in the display to be judged and shoes should be on display in a highly visible place from April 15-26. They are allowed to be displayed all month long. There is no entry fee.

The judging will take place on April 26, in which the business may choose to dress to the theme. The judging is based on 3 categories of most creative, judges choice and best incorporation of the One Thing theme. Judges will be representatives from the Parents Helping Parents Advisory Board/April Campaign Committee.

Winners will be contacted and announced in the Crookston Times and on the KROX website by May 1. They will receive a traveling plaque to display throughout 2013 and be featured in a media campaign.

For more information and to register, contact Sue Thompson at 281-3385 or sthompson@pcphealth.org by April 12.
