Republican state Sen. Stanley Lyson (LEE'-son) says allowing people with concealed carry permits to have a gun inside a school or at public gatherings likely won't do anything to improve safety for people.
Lyson is a former Williams County sheriff and holds a concealed carry permit. Lyson and other senators question whether more guns would lead to accidental shootings and put weapons in the hands of people not adequately trained to react in the event of an emergency.
North Dakota's Senate shot down a measure Thursday that would allow someone with a concealed weapon permit to carry a gun inside a school.
But the Republican-led chamber did endorse a bill that would permit firearms in places of worship if church officials allow it and notify law enforcement.
