Freda was born on February 16, 1931 in Ottertail County, Minnesota, the daughter of Christ and Elsie (Stein) Thom. She graduated from Fergus Falls High School. She was united in marriage to William “Bill” F. Elmore on May 7, 1956 in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. They lived in Roswell, New Mexico until Bill was discharged from the military. They then lived in Fergus Falls and moved to Moorhead, Minnesota. In 1966, they built a house in Crookston and lived there for the rest of their married life.
She worked as a bookkeeper for National Foods in Moorhead for 11 years. She was a stay at home mom and sold Avon for 40 years. After Bill’s retirement she worked for REM group homes in Crookston as an aide for 13 years. Shortly after Bill’s death in 2007, she began living with her daughter, Sharie. Together they moved to the Blackduck area in 2009. Last year Freda moved to the Northome Healthcare Center because of health reasons. She spoke fondly of the NHC staff and their warm loving care.
She was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Crookston for over 50 years, and more recently was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Blackduck. Freda was a warm hearted and caring person who loved her family dearly. She especially enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters. She had a passion for embroidery, always having a set of dish towels in the works, selling some but giving most as loving gifts.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharie (Christopher) Okland of Turtle River; 3 granddaughters, Kjrsten Okland of Chesapeake, Virginia, & Emiliy and Laura Okland both of Turtle River; her sister, Myrtle Allen of Perham, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
