Senior Alex Boone added 15 points for Crookston, while sophomore Aaron Hollcraft added ten.
You have to feel for the Pirates, who have three straight games that all went down to the wire.
The third happened Thursday in Crookston as the Win-E-Mac Patriots escaped with a 62-60 victory after Crookston's last-second shot fell short.
"We have to win sometime," Pirate head coach Greg Garmen said. "We made some bad passes and committed some turnovers late. We needed that last shot to go down instead of out."
The Pirates were uncharacteristically sluggish in the first half.
"Our game is catch and shoot and I don't know why we were holding back," coach Garmen said. "We were not very aggressive."
Pirate senior Travis Vatthauer recorded a game-high 18 points, scoring 14 in the second half. Senior Alex Boone added 15 points for Crookston, while sophomore Aaron Hollcraft added ten.
Marshall McKeever led Win-E-Mac with 14 points, while Zac Tradewell added 11 points and Zach Plante scored ten.
With 41 seconds remaining, Vatthauer knocked down a key three pointer to tie the game at 60.
Markian Lisoff then hit a bucket with 27 seconds and Crookston committed a crucial turnover, forcing it to foul Lisoff with seven seconds remaining.
Fortunately for the Pirates, Lisoff missed both, giving Crookston a chance at the end. Hollcraft brought the ball up the floor and Hollcraft took the shot at the buzzer from the top of the key but it came up short.
Neither team came out with much energy in the first half as the Pirates held a slim 24-22 lead at halftime.
Thanks to a 12-2 run early in the second half, Win-E-Mac took a 40-32 lead with 10:41 remaining, forcing Crookston to take a timeout.
The Pirates responded with an impressive 17-4 run over a two-minute stretch. The run featured the hot hand of Vatthauer, who knocked down three threes. Sophmore Ryan Porter and Boone each had a three in the run too.
Following the run, Crookston led 49-44 with 8:14 left, but Win-E-Mac quickly closed the gap two minutes later and then went up 56-52 with 4:38 remaining.
Hollcraft responded for the Pirates with a big three and a bucket with 2:50 left.
Crookston turned the ball over, though, and Win-E-Mac took a 60-57 lead with a minute left before Vatthauer's key three with 41 seconds left.
The Pirates finish their regular season with an 11-14 mark and are looking at either the two or three seed in Section 8AA North, depending on the outcome of games today.
The Crookston junior varsity team won 57-41 to finish their season with an impressive 20-4 record.
