The Golden Eagles led Concordia-St. Paul 28-24 at halftime of the first round of the NSIC Tournament Wednesday but the Golden Bears went on a 16-0 run in the second half to win 60-45, ending UMC's season at 8-19 record.
Concordia-St. Paul, ranked No. 20 in the nation and the top seed in the NSIC South, improves to 22-5 on the season and advances to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Freshman forward Katrina Moenkedick (Perham, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles with 13 points on the night. Senior post Laurie Tyson (Rosemount, Minn.) finished up her four-year career with a strong night as she had eight points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Brittani Wiese (Albertville, Minn.) had nine points in her final game, while sophomore guard Ashley Martell (Somerset, Wis.) added seven points. The Golden Eagles shot 19-of-67 for 28.4 percent. UMC was 2-of-10 from beyond the arch.
Concordia-St. Paul was led by a double-double of 13 points and 12 points from Anika Whiting. Mandy Poke also had a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds while Carissa Wolyniec added 10 and Kionda Nicks chipped in 12 points. The Golden Bears finished the game shooting 21-of-67 or 31.3 percent.
Minnesota, Crookston seniors Wiese, Tyson and forward Carli Bunning (Boone, Iowa) all finished their careers as Golden Eagles. Wiese finished with 1,219 points which puts in her fourth all-time on UMC’s career scoring list. Tyson ends her career as the all-time rebounder for the Golden Eagles with 698 rebounds.
