The Golden Eagles were swept Friday and Saturday in Virginia, Minn. by Minnesota Duluth (5-4) and Augustana (9-0). They are now 0-4 on the season.
UMC will return to action March 1 against Winona State and Minnesota State on the road in Winona, Minn.
UMC vs. UMD
UMC started the night with a pair of wins in doubles. Junior Katelyn Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) and freshman Catherine Brown (Powell Butte, Ore.) upended Alyssa Brunelli and Kara Saemann 8-6 for a win. UMC also got a victory at the No. 2 spot as seniors Amanda Pihlaja (Duluth, Minn.) and Holly Roepke (Osage, Minn.) picked up a 9-7 win over Bailey Kolles and Delaney Dobbs. At No. 3 doubles, junior Casey Paris (Fairmont, Minn.) and freshman Emily Caldis (St. Paul, Minn.) fell 8-2 to Kelsey Cunningham and Katie Lincoln.
In singles, Roepke fell 7-5, 6-2 to Brunelli at the No. 1 slot. At the No. 2 spot, Johnson picked up her second win of the season as she took down Saemann, 6-1, 6-1. At the No. 3 singles spot, Brown defeated Kolles, 6-0, 7-5 for the first win of her collegiate career. At No. 4 singles, Pihlaja fell 6-0, 5-2 to Lincoln. Paris dropped a match to Cunningham, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. At No. 6 singles, Dobbs defeated Caldis, 6-0, 6-1.
UMC vs. AC
The Vikings started the match by sweeping the doubles matches to go ahead 3-0 early on. Johnson and Brown fell 8-1 to Katie Jesperson and Michelle Wadas. At No. 2 doubles, Augustana’s Jessa Richards and Hannah Gebauer defeated Pihlaja and Roepke 8-1. At the No. 3 slot, Heather Sullivan and Jenna Helleberg defeated Paris and Caldis 8-0.
At No. 1 singles, Richards defeated Roepke, 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 2 slot, Johnson fell to Wadas, 6-1, 6-1. At the No. 3 singles spot, Sullivan upended Brown, 6-1, 6-0. At the No. 4 singles, Helleberg defeated Pihlaja, 6-3, 6-1. At the No. 5 singles slot, Liz Lewis of Augustana defeated Paris, 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 6 spot, Jessica Spaulding defeated Caldis, 6-0, 6-0.
