WDAZ-TV and Forum Communications have announced that, for the first time ever, the Minnesota Section 8A boys’ hockey championship game will be televised live on WDAZ-TV, Channel 8.
The telecast will air at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, live from the East Grand Forks Civic Center.
"The Section 8A championship game is unquestionably one of the biggest high school events in our viewing area," said WDAZ Sports Director Pat Sweeney, who will call the play-by-play of the game. "We are excited to be a part of history, and look forward to the championship telecast."
WDAZ has a long history of live sports telecasts, having produced and aired University of North Dakota games and coaches' shows, as well as Minnesota and North Dakota high school events over the course of five decades.
"WDAZ is thrilled and honored to be the first station to televise the event," said WDAZ Station Manager Rob Horken. "We want to thank Section 8 secretary Jim Weinzierl and the Minnesota State High School League for their cooperation in making this telecast possible."
Thief River Falls is the defending section champion, defeating East Grand Forks 4-1 in last year's section final.
