  • Girls' basketball: Slow 1st half dooms Pirates vs. Spoilers

  • The Pirates started out slow, scoring just 26 points in the first half Friday, as the Grafton Spoilers, North Dakota defending Class B champion, hung on in the second half to beat Crookston 73-62.
     
    Sophomore Brooke Heggie finished with 20 points, 12 of which came in the second half, while sophomore Sydney Boike added 11. Sophomore Kenzie Klatt chipped in nine points, all in the second half, including a pair of threes. Senior Kylie Simmons recorded seven points, while sophomore Amber Froeber added six.
     
    Cassie Thompson led Grafton with 24 points, while Alison Burns finished with 19.
     
    The Spoilers led 36-26 at halftime and hung on in the second half, outscoring the Pirates 37-36.
     
    Crookston is now 16-4 on the season and will be in Thief River Falls Thursday to take on the Prowlers.
