  • Girls' hockey: Pirates to host Park Rapids to open 8A playoffs

  • The Pirates enter the Section 8A Playoffs ranked No. 13 with a record of 12-11 overall and 4-5 against section opponents. As the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, the Pirates will host No. 5 Park Rapids Thursday at 7 p.m.
     
    During the regular season, Crookston swept the Panthers 4-2 and 2-0, recording 58 shots in the most recent meeting.
     
    The Pirates are led in scoring this season by senior Brianna Breiland, who has 49 goals and 13 assists in 23 games. Senior Natasha Skala comes in second with eight goals and six assists in 22 games, while sophomore Sabrina Delorme has five goals and eight assists. Junior Brooke Schmitz has a goal and 11 assists in 22 games, while freshman Tori Demarais has a goal and 11 assists in 23 games. Junior Lizzy Awender has the third most goals on the team with six in 23 games, while junior Amber Trostad has five goals in 21 games.
     
    Eighth grade goalie Lexie Cormican has a record of 8-11 on the season, recording two shutouts with a 3.41 goals against average and a save percentage of .873.
     
    In the other section play-in game, No. 3 East Grand Forks hosts No. 6 Lake of the Woods Thursday. Waiting in the semifinals with byes are, No. 1 Warroad and No. 2 Thief River Falls.
     
    Warroad gets the winner of Crookston and Park Rapids, while Thief River Falls gets the winner of East Grand Forks and Lake of the Woods. The semifinals and finals will be Feb. 11 and 14 in East Grand Forks.
