The Peacocks swept the doubles to take a 3-0 advantage on the day.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston fell 8-1 to Upper Iowa University Friday afternoon to open up the 2013 women’s tennis season in Sartell, Minn. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-1 on the season while Upper Iowa improves to 1-0 on the year.

The Peacocks swept the doubles to take a 3-0 advantage on the day. Karli Loewecke and Paige Olson defeated Katelyn Johnson (Jr., Monticello, Minn.) and Catherine Brown (Fr., Powell Butte, Ore.) 8-3 at the No. 1 spot. Then at the No. 2 slot, Rosangel Espinoza and Nicole Pothen took down UMC’s pair of Amanda Pihlaja (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) and Holly Roepke (Sr., Osage, Minn.) 9-8. UIU rounded out the doubles portion of the day with a 8-0 win from Meredith Worrall and Laura Alvarez over Casey Paris (Jr., Fairmont, Minn.) and Emily Caldis (Fr., St. Paul, Minn.).

In singles, Loewecke picked up a win over Roepke 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 slot. At No. 2 singles, Olson upended Johnson 6-2, 6-3. The No. 3 spot saw Pothen upend Brown 6-3, 6-1. The most contested match of the day came at the No. 5 slot as Worrall took the first set over Paris 6-4 but the UMC player, Paris, was able to bounce back to force a third set with a 6-2 win in the second. In the third set, Worrall was able to pick up the set and the match with a 10-6 victory. At the No. 6 slot, Upper Iowa capped off the day and a 8-1 win with a victory from Alvarez over Caldis 6-2, 7-6.

The Golden Eagles will return to action Feb. 8 in Fargo, N.D. with a match against Northern State at 6 p.m.
