Donald James Strommen, age 83, Crookston, died Saturday morning, February 2nd at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. Donald was born on February 15, 1929 in Crookston, son of Olaf and Thelma (Ness) Strommen. He was baptized and confirmed at the Sand Hill Lutheran Church at rural Climax. He grew up and was educated at Climax, MN, graduating from high school there. He then served in the US Army from 1949 to 1951 in the Korean Theatre of Operations, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was united in marriage with Delores Jean Eck on September 4, 1954 in Winger, MN. They made their home in Crookston. He worked for American Crystal Sugar in Crookston, beginning in 1954, working his way up to foreman and eventually yard coordinator, before retiring in 1991. He was a lifetime member of Crookston VFW Post 1902, American Legion Post 20 and the Crookston Eagles Aerie 873.
Survivors include his wife: Delores of Crookston; daughter: Debra Jean (Larry) Paulson of Crookston; three sons: David (Shana) Strommen, Daniel Strommen and Douglas Strommen, all of Crookston; six grandchildren: Ross Strommen, Mandi Strommen, Ashley (Aaron) Gagner, Zachary Strommen, Brock Strommen and Christopher Larson; two great-grandchildren: Kendra Strommen and Aadin Gagner; three sisters-in-law: Donna Watne of Gonvick, Lois Peterson of McIntosh and Dianne Strommen of Temecula, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by a son: Dale Strommen (1977); his parents: Olaf and Thelma Strommen; parents-in-law: Leonard and Freda Eck; brother: Ronald Strommen; sister: Mary Ann & Mickey LeBlanc; and brothers-in-law: Lewie Watne and Orville Peterson.
The funeral service for Donald Strommen will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 6th, 2013 at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, with The Rev. Jo Gast, officiating. Visitation will be for two hours before the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
