On Wednesday afternoon 15 students in grades five through eight participated in a district-level spelling bee held in Highland School's Large Group Room.
This is the first year students from the high school were invited to participate.
The super spellers had the opportunity to show off their skills, following the rules of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. First place winner Yash Kapoor, a sixth grader, won the bee by correctly spelling "unforeseeable." Both Kapoor and first runner up Cade Salentine, a seventh grader, will advance to the regional spelling bee in Thief River Falls on Feb. 13.
Spelling bee participants included: Luis Argueta, Ben Brantner, Caden Bruley, Drew Dragseth, Brita Fagerlund, Yash Kapoor, Mason LaPlante, Jacob Luna, Patrick Matlack, Dante Norris, Alex Orvik, Cade Salentine, Sophia Steiner, Ethan Stroot and Dayen Sundquist.
Judging Crookston's spelling bee were district staff Jamie Macho, Jayne Nesvig, Dan Halland and Nancy Pearson.
