  • The Pirates nabbed their third Section 8AA win in eight days with a 66-45 win over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Tuesday in Crookston behind a game-high 15 points from senior guard Alex Boone.

"We needed it," Pirate head coach Greg Garmen said of the win. "DGF has been up and down, playing well at times and not so well at other times. We shot well, moved it well, defended well and that all leads to a nice victory.

"The last few games Alex has really come alive," Garmen continued on Boone. "He's hustling and getting on the floor for loose balls. I think other kids are looking at what he's doing as one of the smallest kids and they can do it too."

The Rebels of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton were limited to just 16 points in the first half as the Pirates led 29-16 and Crookston pulled away in the second half, outscoring the Rebels 37-29.

Sophomore guard Ryan Porter added ten points for the Pirates, while junior post Michael Hefta had nine and sophomore Aaron Hollcraft and senior Travis Vatthauer each had eight points. Senior post Alec Boike chipped in six points.

Brock Stalberger led the Rebels with nine points.

The Pirates improve to 9-8 on the season and 6-4 against section opponents. They will host the top team in 8AA South Saturday when Hawley visits for a girls’ and boys’ doubleheader. The girls' game starts at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow.

"We have a tough February coming up," Garmen said. "The North half will change and we'll need to win some games to solidify our spot. You want to position yourself with the highest seed possible and make some noise come tournament time."
