  • The Pirates put up another solid performance and earned their third consecutive dual win with a 46-31 victory over Fertile-Beltrami in Fertile Monday. Crookston has now won six of its last seven duals.

After four matches the Pirates found themselves down 19-0 as eighth grader Preston Desrosier, seventh grader Colton Weiland and junior Kyle Caputo were each wrestling up a weight.

"It was not really by choice," said Pirate head coach Chad Hitchen of his wrestler going up a weight. "Wrestling on a Monday night, kids come back a little heavy so you have to make adjustments. It was not planned.

"We knew going in Fertile's strong points were 106 to 126," said Hitchen. "We were able to weather the storm and get us going at 132. I was pleased a little bit we were not down 24-0."

As they do in most duals, sophomore Cody Weiland and junior Nate Merten kick started the Pirates with a pair of pins in less than two minutes.

After a Fertile-Beltrami pin at 145 pounds, senior Wyatt Hanson and junior Blake Bergeron responded for Crookston with pins to cut the deficit to 25-24.

Fertile-Beltrami would answer with a pin at 170 pounds, but would be shut out after that as sophomore Luke Edlund earned a convincing 16-2 victory, freshman Jesse Bosquez and senior Josh Edlund each earned forfeit wins and junior A.J. Biermaier recorded a pin in 51 seconds at heavyweight.

"We were wrestling pretty well, getting pins," said Hitchen. "I was a little disappointed in getting a forfeit win with Josh Edlund. He's our horse and of course teams want to avoid him. But Fertile-Beltrami's top wrestlers wrestled our seventh grader at 120 and our eighth grader at 106. The Edlund's are from Beltrami and people came to see him wrestler. Just to get a forfeit is disappointing."

Hitchen was pleased with his squad's performance.

"All in all, we wrestled well as a team," he said. "We were able to fill all our weight classes. It was a big night with coaches versus cancer. Our team raised the most money at $1,355. Fertile raised about $830 so we won a free pizza party. It went to a good cause and we won a pizza party and won the dual."

The Pirates are now 7-4 in duals this season. They will host East Grand Forks/Sacred Heart Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
