  • Boys' hockey: Roughriders jump out to 4-0 lead, down Pirates 6-4

  • Grand Forks Red River jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Pirates Saturday in Grand Forks and hung on for a 6-4 win.
     
    Senior Connor Morgan had two goals and an assist for Crookston, while senior Ryan Bittner had a goal and two assists.
     
    Freshman Adam Huglen recorded 17 saves before being pulled in the second period for junior Parker Epema, who had 15 saves.
     
    Charlie Churchill recorded 15 saves in goal for Red River.
     
    Jacob Benson got the Roughriders on the board at the 3:11 mark of the first period, while Branden Lunski scored back-to-back goals at 6:39 and 8:49. Ben Cleveland made it 4-0 at the 12:48 mark.
     
    Morgan got Crookston on the board with 2:21 left in the first with his sixth of the season from senior Ryan Edevold. Freshman Doug Larson then made it 4-2 with 34 seconds left in the first with a power play goal, his sixth of the season, from Bittner and Edevold.
     
    Bittner then made it a one-goal game at the 5:05 mark of the second period with his 12th goal of the season from Morgan and senior Brady Heppner.
     
    Red River answered, though, with back-to-back goals at 12:25 from Ross Johnson on a power play and Benson at 13:25 on a power play.
     
    The Pirates looked to be on track to come back with Morgan's seventh goal of the season at 1:13 of the third period on a power play from junior Justin Cameron and Bittner but the scoring stopped there.
     
    The loss drops the Pirates to 9-11 on the season. They will travel to East Grand Forks Tuesday for a huge Section 8A game against the Green Wave, who are 15-2-2 on the season.
