Memorial service is Friday, Jan. 25 in Crookston.

    Russell Lee Parkin, age 63, of Crookston, MN, died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at his residence in Crookston. 

Russell was born on June 29, 1949 in Crookston, MN, son of Loren and Gertrude (Mahla) Parkin.  He was baptized and confirmed at the Euclid Presbyterian Church.  He grew up and was educated at Euclid, MN and graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1967.  He enlisted in the US Navy, serving in Italy for a time; he was able to witness the Gran Prix Auto Race.  After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1972, he worked construction in the Spicer-Willmar (MN) area hauling gravel.  He returned to Crookston, where he worked at Dahlgren Seed Company in the roasting plant for over twenty years.  He was united in marriage with LueRae Herberg on June 21, 1975.  He also hauled sugar beets for Mike Reitmeier for thirty-five years and had worked for the Tiedemann Brothers in Euclid after retiring from Dahlgren’s.  Russell moved to the Oak Court Apartments in 2009.  He enjoyed tinkering in his garage (shop) and working with tools.  He was a quiet person, easygoing, recently enjoying M&H’s chocolate chip cookies.  He enjoyed the word jumbles in the GF Herald.

He is survived by his two daughters: Dawn (Justin) Nelson of New England, ND, Lisa Parkin of Crookston; five grandchildren: Jayla, Teegan, Kazen & Justin Dean (JD) Nelson, and Dallas Ibarra; siblings: Robert Parkin of Provo, UT, Howard (Sherrie) Parkin of Yucaipa, CA, Wayne (Maureen) Parkin of East Grand Forks, Curtis (Tammy) Parkin of Crookston, Marilyn (Henry) Weiland of Euclid, Keith (Kim) Parkin of Crookston, and Neil (Carol) Parkin of Euclid.  He was preceded in death by his parents: Loren and Gertrude Parkin.

The memorial service for Russell Parkin will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, with the Rev. Bill Reck, officiating.  Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home.  Interment will be at Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.  Military honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council.
