  • Boys' basketball: Prowlers get the best of Pirates again, 87-70

  • Pirate senior Travis Vatthauer finished with a game-high 18 points but the Pirates fell 87-70 to Thief River Falls Friday on the road.
     
    The Class AAA Prowlers beat the Pirates 67-41 on Dec. 29 in the championship game of the Russ Smith Holiday Classic in Thief River Falls.
     
    The loss drops Crookston to 6-7 on the season. Thief River Falls is now 10-3.
     
    The Prowlers led 45-34 at halftime and outscored the Pirates 42-36 in the second half.
     
    Following up Vatthauer's 18 points was junior post Michael Hefta and sophomore Aaron Hollcraft each scoring 13 points, while sophomore Ryan Porter added 12.
     
    Nick Onkka led Thief River Falls with 17 points, while Jacob Joppru added 16, Jacob Leier had 13 and Nick Hoffard scored 12 points.
     
    The Pirates have lost four of their last five games. They will host Roseau today at 7:30 p.m. The section rival Rams are 4-6 this season. Crookston beat Roseau 60-58 on a buzzer beater by senior Alec Boike on Dec. 11.
