With two tournaments postponed or cancelled last weekend due to the winter storm, the Pirates were looking forward to Tuesday's dual with Park Rapids. Sickness struck the Panthers and only seven matches were played.
Crookston prevailed 54-20 in the dual over Park Rapids with pins from junior Blake Bergeron at 160 pounds, senior Josh Edlund at 220 pounds and junior A.J. Biermaier at 285 pounds.
"It was very hard to get up for the match," said Pirate head coach Chad Hitchen. "We started the night pretty flat and the crowd on hand was quiet. I think they looked at the opposing team and only seeing seven kids they realized there would be a lot of forfeits. We have been on a long layoff since Jan. 3. It was nice we could fill a full team and be able to take their free points. I've been on the other side of that. The night ended well with a win with Biermaier, Edlund and Bergeron. All in all, it's always to good win at home and get back on the mat again."
The Mahnomen-Waubun Dual Tournament, which was scheduled for last Friday, has been postponed to Jan. 21. The Mayville-Portland Tournament, originally scheduled for last Saturday, has been cancelled.
The Pirates will compete in the Thief River Falls Tournament Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
"TRF is always one of our bigger tournaments with about 15 teams in varsity," said Hitchen. "There won't be much rest from Saturday to Monday. We need those right now, though. We were a little sluggish last night."
