  • Pirate girls' hockey senior center Brianna Breiland, who attends Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls, has verbally committed to play next season at University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

Breiland has recorded 42 points (33 goals, 9 assists) in 14 games this season. Her 33 goals ranks second in the state.

"Well it's close to home and I am a huge family girl, also my mom really wanted me to go River Falls," Breiland said in an email to the Times. "I really enjoy the coaches and the campus. It has a big yet small feel to it and since I'm from a small town I like the small feel but I've always wanted to go bigger!"

Breiland said she also considered North Dakota, St. Cloud State, Augsburg, Connecticut and Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She made visits to UND, St. Cloud State and Connecticut.

Breiland is actually familiar with a few other River Falls recruits

"I actually know three other recruits that are in my class who are going there," she said. "I've played with them many times and I am really good friends with them and their familes."

UW-River Falls competes in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

Breiland and the Pirates are 7-7 on the season and will host Park Rapids today at 7:30 p.m.
