  • Boys' hockey: Rams pull away with 3 quick third-period goals, beat Pirates 6-2

  • Roseau scored three goals in the opening minute and a half of the third period Thursday and went on to beat the Pirates 6-2 in Crookston.
    The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period with Crookston's goal by senior Brady Heppner, his 13th of the season, at the 1:38 mark. Roseau's Alex Strand tied it with 6:16 left with a power play goal.
    The Rams scored two in the second period from Alex Ziegler at the 5:10 mark and Tanner Okeson on a power play at the 9:54 mark.
    Despite trailing by two goals, the Pirates were still in the game after the second period as they held a 27-15 advantage in shots.
    The Rams scored just 12 seconds into the third period on goal by Zach Yon. Yon scored just 37 seconds later on a power play to make it 5-1. Ziegler got his second of the night at the 1:27 mark of the third.
    Pirate senior Ryan Bittner scored his tenth goal of the season nearly two minutes into the third period on a power play with an assist from senior Ethan Mercil.
    The Pirates had a five-minute power play with about ten minutes left in the third but failed to capitalize.
    Pirate freshman Adam Huglen recorded 21 saves in goal. Ryan Anderson had 34 saves in goal for Roseau.
    Crookston falls to 7-6 on the season and has now lost four of its last five. The Pirates will look to rebound Tuesday, Jan. 8 on the road against Bemidji.
