CHS juniors are MSHSL award finalists.
Michael Hefta and Amber Trostad, both juniors at Crookston High School, have been selected as finalists for the Minnesota State High School League ExCel Award, which is designed to recognize juniors who are excelling in arts, athletics and community involvement.
Requirements for the ExCel Award include being a junior in high school, making satisfactory progress toward graduation requirements, participating in a League-sponsored fine arts and/or athletic activity, holding a leadership position in their school, work voluntarily in their community and meet MSHSL General Eligibility Requirements.
Michael Hefta, the son of Greg and Lori Hefta, is an Honor Roll student, a member of Student Council, a member of Leo Club and is a three sport athlete: football, basketball and track. Michael participated on the State True Track Team as a thrower of the shot and disc. He also participates in the high school band. His community services include volunteer work at his church as a monthly youth assistant and service activities through the Leo Club. Michael also serves the community through the Boys Scouts in such capacities as a volunteer at the Food Shelter, delivering meals to Veterans, and at the Adopt a Highway program. He has also helped out in youth football, basketball and track as a coach and as an official.
Amber Trostad, the daughter of Chris and Tina Trostad, is an Honor Roll student, a member of Student Council, a Leo Club member and is also a three sport athlete: tennis, hockey and golf. Amber is a captain for both the hockey and golf team. She also participates in the high school band. Her community services include volunteer work at her church as an Apostle and service activities through the Leo Club. She also serves the community in such capacities as a volunteer at the Food Bank, sandbagging at the city dikes and volunteering at the Community Halloween Party. She has also helped out with youth hockey at Wednesday Night Lights.
Both Michael and Amber will be finalists for the regional ExCel Award, which will be announced by the MSHSL committee in February.
