  • Portland Winterhawks left wing and former Crookston Pirate Paul Bittner closed out the 2012 year on a tear.
     
    With a number of teammates from the Winterhawks absent, participating in the World Juniors Championship in Ufa, Russia, Bittner took advantage of the extra ice time, earning three goals and three assists in the final four games of the 2012 season.
     
    On Dec. 29 against Tri-City, the 16-year-old, 6-foot-4, 194-pound left wing had his best game with the Winterhawks to date with two goals and an assist.
     
    Bittner now has five goals and seven assists and is +7 in 23 games.
     
    The Winterhawks are 32-5-1 this season and lead the Western Hockey League's (WHL) United States Division of the Western Conference.
     
    Bittner was a freshman last season with the Pirates and recorded 15 goals and six assists in 25 games.
