- Pirate senior Brianna Breiland recorded a hat trick and now has 33 goals in 13 games this season.
The Pirates have struggled to put two solid games together this season with its longest winning streak just two games.
They have a chance to start one in the new year as they closed out 2012 with a 7-4 win over Fargo South Friday in the finale of the second annual Pirate Holiday Classic.
Pirate senior Brianna Breiland recorded a hat trick and now has 33 goals in 13 games this season. She trails Red Wing's Nicole Schammel, who has 38 goals in 17 games, for the most goals in the state.
One key for the Pirates putting together a substantial winning streak is scoring from the second and third lines. They got three goals against Fargo South.
Sophomore Abby Parr and freshman Leah Trostad each scored their first goals of the season, while junior Lizzy Awender scored her fourth. Senior defenseman Natasha Skala also had a goal.
Eighth grader Lexie Cormican recorded 16 saves for the win in goal for the Pirates. Fargo South's Emily Grothmann had 29 saves in goal.
Fargo South's Alex Woken scored at the 3:06 mark of the first period, but Breiland responded just 14 seconds later on an assist from freshman defenseman Tori Demarais.
The Pirates broke away in the second period starting with Breiland's second goal at the 5:02 mark. Then Parr made it 3-1 just 20 seconds later on an assist from Skala.
About a minute after that Breiland completed the hat trick to make it 4-1.
Nevada Wilson cut the deficit in half for Fargo South with 5:36 left in the second period.
With 49 seconds left on a power play, Skala took a pass from junior Brooke Schmitz and one-timed it, beating Grothmann to make it 5-2.
Fargo South made things interesting in the third period, scoring on a power play with 8:40 left and on the man short with 6:25 left.
A minute after that, though, Awender scored a shorthanded goal to make it 6-4. Trostad then added an empty net goal with 23 seconds left to seal the win.
The Pirates, now 7-6 on the season, will look to start a winning streak Thursday, Jan. 3 in Roseau against the Rams. On Friday the Pirates host Park Rapids with the opening faceoff set for 7:30 p.m.
