  • OBITUARY: Lydia Borth

  • Mother of Crookston resident Denise Nicholas. The funeral will be Jan. 2, 2013 in Hazen.

  • Lydia Borth, 82, of Beulah, ND, formerly of Turtle Lake, ND, died peacefully on Friday morning December 28, 2012 at the Knife River Care Center in Beulah, ND. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST, Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, with Pastor Walt Wolff officiating. Burial will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, ND.
    Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CST on Tuesday at Barbot-Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.
    Lydia was born in Tappen, ND on June 15, 1930, the daughter of John and Bertha (Aiperspach) Hottman (the oldest of 4 daughters). She grew up in Tappen and was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran church. In April of 1947 she was united in marriage to Norbert Borth in Medina, ND. They lived in Tappen, ND and owned and operated the grocery/variety store there until January 1955 when they moved to Turtle Lake, ND to start a grocery store. Through the years their family grew to include three daughters, LaDean, Noreen, and Denise and their business, Borth’s Department Store, grew to include groceries, clothing, dry goods, and gifts. Lydia also had a drapery and decorated business in Turtle Lake and the surrounding areas. Lydia & Norbert lived in Turtle Lake until 1978, when they moved to Bismarck to own and operate a home decor business until failing health caused them to retire. In 1996, Norbert moved to the Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Norbert passed away on August 16, 2003. Lydia moved into the Senior Suites, Hazen until August 2009 when she became a resident in the Beulah Knife River Care Center.
    Lydia’s faith played a large role in her life; she was active in her church all her life. She was a gracious hostess. She was a beautiful loving mother and she dearly loved her three daughters, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They were very special to her.
    Lydia is survived by her daughters, LaDean (Terry) Schafer, Linton, ND, Noreen (fiancé, Dave Steckler) Gabriel of Hazen, Denise (Nick) Nicholas of Crookston, MN; 8 grandchildren, Tammy (Leo) Worner, Scott (Laurie) Schafer, John (Nici) Gabriel, Sarah (Eric) Volk, Travis (Jamie) Nicholas, Laura Lee (Jay) Tupa, Michael Nicholas and Benjamin Nicholas; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Emma Ritter of Scott, LA; numerous nieces and nephews.
    Lydia was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Norbert Borth; her parents; her great-grandson Ian Gabriel; great-granddaughter, Cecelia Volk; two sisters, Esther Taylor, and Ida Kluth.
    Arrangements conducted by Barbot-Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
