  • Boys' basketball: Pirates place 2nd at TRF tourney; Boone, Hollcraft all-tournament

  • For the second time in three seasons the Pirates played for the Northwest Russ Smith Holiday Classic championship Saturday in Thief River Falls and, again, they lost to the host team, Thief River Falls. The Prowlers won 67-41 for their fourth straight holiday tournament title.
     
    Senior Alex Boone and sophomore Aaron Hollcraft were each named to the all-tournament team.
     
    Thief River Falls jumped out to a 41-19 lead at halftime and cruised in the second half for the 26-point victory.
     
    Jacob Leier led the Prowlers with 26 points, while Jacob Joppru added 17. Both represented Thief River Falls on the all-tournament team.
     
    Hollcraft, Crookston's leading scorer this season, was held to two points. He is now averaging 13.8 points per game. Boone led the Pirates with 14 points and is  currently averaging 13 points per game. Sophomore Ryan Porter added 11 points for the Pirates.
     
    Crookston is now 5-4 on the season and will travel to East Grand Forks Friday, Jan. 4 to take on the rival Green Wave at 7:30 p.m.
     
    CHS vs. Northern Freeze
    Crookston handed Northern Freeze its first loss of the season Friday with a 62-58 win in the semifinals of the 30th annual Northwest Russ Smith Holiday Classic in Thief River Falls.
     
    Hollcraft led the Pirates with 17 points, while senior Travis Vatthauer had 13 points, all in the second half. Porter and Boone each had ten points.
     
    Crookston led 37-30 at halftime and held on in the second half with Northern Freeze outscoring it 28-25.
     
    Kade Klasen led Northern Freeze with 24 points, while Dustin Dahl added 14.
