100-plus year old building was home to St. Vincent's Hospital.
After standing for more than a century, the Polk County Professional Building is approaching the end, as the process to call for demolition quotes is now in full swing after the Board of Commissioners approved going forward with it last week.
The building, which started out as St. Vincent's Hospital and ended housing county offices such as social services, public defenders and the county attorney, has sat empty for the last few years and would require a significant infusion of funds to bring it up to fire and building codes, said County Administrator Chuck Whiting. The asbestos has been removed and a party had expressed interest in purchasing and renovating the building a few months ago, but that prospect fell through.
A timeline for demolition has yet to be determined.
