  • Four Pirate teams to play 10 games in 3 days

  • Four of the five Pirate winter sports teams are in action over the next three days with a combined ten games to be played at holiday tournaments.
     
    All four of the teams last played Thursday, Dec. 20.
     
    Girls' hockey senior Brianna Breiland is second in the state with 29 goals in 11 games this season. She trails Red Wing's Nicole Schammel, who has 31 goals in 14 games.
     
    Girls' hockey
    The Pirates come into the second annual Pirate Invitational with a record of 6-5 after a big win over Section 8A rival East Grand Forks last Thursday.
     
    The Pirates open up the tournament tonight at 7:30 p.m. against the Grand Forks KnightRiders. On Friday the Pirates will finish the tournament against Fargo South at 7:30 p.m.
     
    The other five teams participating are: Jamestown, Park Rapids, Minot, Mandan and East Grand Forks.
     
    Boys' hockey
    The eighth annual Ralph Engelstad Holiday Classic begins today at 2:30 p.m. with the 6-3 Pirates facing Fargo North. On Friday Crookston faces Irondale and the tournament wraps up Saturday with a huge Section 8A contest between the Pirates and Thief River Falls at 7:30 p.m.
     
    Chanhassen and St. Michael-Albertville are also participating.
     
    Girls' basketball
    The Pirates usually host the KROX Radio Holiday Tournament but this year they will be competing in the Annandale Holiday Tournament. The 5-1 Pirates, ranked No. 10 in Class AA, will face Chatfield Friday at 1:30 p.m. and will either Eden Valley-Watkins and Annandale Saturday.
     
    Boys' basketball
    This year marks the 30th of the Northwest Russ Smith Holiday Classic in Thief River Falls. The Pirates, 3-3 on the season, will jump start the tournament against long-time rival Warren-Alvarado-Oslo today at 2:15 p.m.
     
    Crookston will then play Friday against either Clearbrook/Gonvick or Northern Freeze. In the bottom half of the bracket are: Red Lake, Kittson County Central, Sacred Heart and Thief River Falls.
