  • Is your home in need of repairs? USDA Rural Development can help.
USDA Rural Development has grant funds available statewide for very-low income homeowners for home repair to correct or remove existing health, safety, sanitary, and accessibility issues. Grants up to $7,500 may be available to eligible households. This program is available to eligible elderly homeowners living in rural areas and small towns.
Dan Labat, area director for USDA Rural Development, said Monday that there is a narrow window of opportunity to receive these funds.
“We have a unique opportunity in the next few weeks to utilize grant funds before those funds will become unavailable. We’re looking for qualified applicants right now through early January to apply for these grants,” he said. “If you are an elderly homeowner with very-low income and have a need for essential repairs, we would like to hear from you.” Interested persons may apply at any time for this program but funding may become limited after January.
Staff at USDA Rural Development will be available to explain the program and assist with applications. To be eligible for a grant, applicants must own and occupy their home and be age 62 or older. In order to receive a grant, USDA must determine that the household is unable to repay a loan and the repairs must be for eligible purposes. There are also limits on the amount of household assets one can own. “The homeowner would use the grant funds to hire licensed contractors to repair the home by removing health and safety hazards or to make the dwelling accessible for occupants with a disability,” said Labat. “We ask those interested to place a call to our office and we can explain the program and assist with the process.”
