Sophomore guard Danica Brekken and senior Kylie Simmons each had eight points.
After snapping a 12-game losing streak to East Grand Forks last season, the Pirates started a winning streak against the Green Wave, a Class AAA team, with a 61-49 victory Tuesday in Crookston.
Sophomore Sydney Boike led the Pirates with 17 points, while sophomore center Brooke Heggie added 15. Sophomore guard Danica Brekken and senior Kylie Simmons each had eight points, while senior Taylor Demarais had five and seniors Katie Davidson and Erica Samuelson each had four.
"Brooke had some tough baskets in the paint," said Pirate head coach Lon Boike. "Sydney did a good job tonight too. That's what we expect out of them. We've grown to expect that and they've worked hard in the offseason and in practice.
"Danica Brekken is playing very well," noted coach Boike. "She is averaging eight to ten points per game. She has always been a good defender and now she is shooting well. She has worked hard to get to this point and she is very valuable to the team."
Kelsey Schlenk led East Grand Forks with 13 points.
"In the first half, offensively we were good but not so good defensively," said coach Boike. "It was the opposite in the second half. When we needed to keep them at bay we shut them down."
East Grand Forks got into the double bonus before the midway point of the first half.
"We play pretty aggressive defense so we're going to foul," Boike said. "We didn't cover their shooters real well in our zone defense."
The Pirates got a number of easy buckets on transition in the first half.
"Especially in the first half we had a lot of runouts," said coach Boike. "Defensively we stayed with man-to-man in the second half and they only scored 21 points. We shut down their outside shooting."
Boike capped the Pirates’ 11-2 run to start the game with a long jumper, but the Green Wave answered with a 10-2 run over about two minutes to cut the deficit to 13-12.
Later in the first half Brekken knocked down a three with 8:07 left and about a minute later Heggie had back-to-back buckets, converting one into a three-point play to give Crookston a 29-20 lead with 6:26 remaining.
Schlenk stepped up for the Green Wave, though, and hit back-to-back threes and another Green Wave bucket made it a one-point game again at 29-28 with 5:11 left.
The Pirates finished the first half with a 9-0 run on two Heggie buckets, a Simmons basket and a three from Brekken to make it 38-28.
In the second half the Pirates kept their distance from the Green Wave, never giving up the lead.
The Pirates improve to 5-1 on the season and will host Thief River Falls Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
