  • It's all about the Benjamins for Pirate Wrestling. Or as they call it, "the Franklins."
Pirate junior Blake Bergeron was the fifth member on the roster to join the Franklin Club, 100 career wins, Tuesday as the Pirates swept Grand Forks Central and Grand Forks Red River 44-24 and 38-25, respectively, in a pair of dual at Red River High School.
Bergeron joins fellow Franklins sophomore Cody Weiland, junior Nate Merten and seniors Wyatt Hanson and Josh Edlund.
"It's very rare you get five kids in the 100-win club on the same team," Pirate head coach Chad Hitchen said. "I told assistant coach Wes Hanson on our way home, 'Well we got five Franklins on the team.' He didn't know what I was talking about. Going into every dual we count on those five."
Bergeron got his 100th victory in a forfeit against Central to open the night. He beat Red River's Ben Trenne 13-2 for his 101st win.
Weiland breezed through his two matches, earning two pins in a combined 69 seconds. Wyatt Hanson also had a pair of pins, while eighth grader Preston Desrosier, Merten and senior Edlund each had two wins on the night.
"In North Dakota they draw for the start and we drew 160 pounds and the second match starts one up from that," explained coach Hitchen. "The first was dual back and forth and was 12-12 going into 106. It was close all the way until about 138 when we pulled away with our strengths. The big turning point was Preston Desrosier getting a pin with three-seconds left. Kyle Caputo got a nice major decision to put us up by one at 126. Then we could breathe easier with heart of the lineup to finish the match.
"It was the same story against Red River," coach Hitchen continued. "It was close all the way through. Colton came through with a big pin late in the third period. We only gave up two pins all night. We were down by ten or 12 going into the last four weights. I said if we're going to finish a dual these are the four I want."
The Pirates will compete in the Big Bear Tournament in Cass Lake, Minn. Friday and Saturday.
