Sophomore Aaron Hollcraft led the Pirates with 18 points.
Pirate senior center Alec Boike hit a short jumper with 1.6 seconds remaining to give the Pirates a 60-58 section win over the Roseau Rams in Roseau Tuesday.
Was that a big win for the Pirates or what?
"Heck yeah," exclaimed head coach Greg Garmen. "Especially after the way we got out. In the first half we got things rolling. We didn't shoot well in the second half and they crept back into it. We had a few turnovers they converted and we were a step slower than in the first half. Our pressure didn't affect them like it did early."
Sophomore Aaron Hollcraft led the Pirates with 18 points, while senior Alex Boone chipped in 13 and Boike added 11. Junior Michael Hefta scored eight points and senior Travis Vatthauer had six.
Jacob Eaton led Roseau with 18 points, while Ethan Johnson added 16 and Bailey Sampson had 14.
Coach Garmen said the final minute was mayhem.
"It was sort of chaos," he said. "With about a minute left we took a shot and got the rebound and ran more time off. We decided to go for one shot and the win. As it happens often, it was chaos and someone has to take it and go. Alec probably was not in his regular shooting position but he got nothing but net.
"It was good to be in a tight ball game," Garmen continued. "We haven't worked on many end-game situations. It was loud in there and we were yelling from the bench. Alec had a nose for the basket and he got one."
The Pirates jumped out to a 35-20 lead in the first half but Roseau fought back in the second half, outscoring Crookston 38-25 but it wasn't enough.
Crookston is now 2-1 on the season and 2-0 against Section 8AA North opponents. The Pirates will host another Section 8AA North rival, Warroad, Friday. The opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
