  • Crookston Special Olympics Basketball will start on Tuesday, Dec. 18 with practices held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Crookston Armory. There will not be practice on Tuesday, Dec. 25th and Jan. 1st. Volunteer coaches will once again be Jeff Durbin and Dan Burris.

To be eligible for Special Olympics you must be at least 8-years-old, and have an intellectual disability or closely related developmental disability, defined as functional limitations in both general learning and two or more adaptive skill areas: communication, leisure, self-direction, home living, community use, work, health and safety, academics, self-care and social skills.

New athletes must also have a physical, along with an application completed by their physician. Physical’s and accompanying paperwork are valid for three years.

While no dates have been set for activities at this point, the Crookston Special Olympics delegation usually participates in a tournament in East Grand Forks in early February, plays during half-time of a Crookston Pirates boys’ basketball game, plays in a Special Olympics basketball fundraiser sponsored by UMC, and participates in a tournament and individual skills event in Perham, Minn. The season is usually wrapped up by March.

If you or someone you know is interested in joining the team, please plan to attend the first practice on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Or for more information, please contact volunteer coordinators Bill and Holly Anderson at 218-988-2010.
