  • Girls' hockey: Pirates win 2 at REA Holiday Classic, Breiland leads state with 14 goals

  • Pirate senior Brianna Breiland posted six goals in Saturday's 7-1 win over Eveleth-Gilbert at the Ralph Engelstad Arena Girls' Hockey Holiday Classic in Thief River Falls. Breiland now leads all of Minnesota Girls' Hockey with 14 goals in fives games.
     
    Breiland scored two goals and had an assist in Crookston's 4-2 win Friday over Park Rapids at the REA Holiday Classic.
     
    The Pirates are now 3-2 on the season and will travel to Warroad Tuesday to face the top-ranked Warriors. The Pirates will host Roseau Thursday in Red Lake Falls at 7:30 p.m.

    Pirate eighth grade goalie Lexie Cormican earned her first career victory with 18 saves in the 4-2 win Friday in Thief River Falls.
     
    The game was tied 2-2 in the third period when junior wing Amber Trostad scored at about the two-minute mark with her first goal of the season. Assists were credited to senior defenseman Natasha Skala and junior center Lizzy Awender.
     
    Breiland added an empty net goal with 19 seconds left to seal the victory.
     
    Following a scoreless first period, Pirate freshman wing Marietta Geist scored a power play goal about two minutes into the second period from Breiland and junior wing Brooke Schmitz.
     
    Breiland then scored a short handed goal with 8:29 left in the second period.
     
    Park Rapids responded, though, with 40 seconds left in the period with a power play goal by Bailee Jerger. Then, 17 seconds into the third period, Hannah Williams notched another power play goal for Park Rapids.
     
    Shania Johnson recorded 44 saves in net for Park Rapids.

    Junior goalie Sidney Erickson recorded 14 saves in the 7-1 victory Saturday in Thief River Falls.
     
    Breiland started out the scoring Saturday with 3:18 left in the first period with a power play goal. Assists came from freshman Sabrina Delorme and Schmitz.
     
    Park Rapids tied the game 34 seconds into the second period with a goal by Sam Mugge but the Pirates responded with six unanswered goals after that.
     
    Breiland scored at 2:33 of the second period from Erickson and made it 3-1 with 1:39 remaining in the second period on an assist from Schmitz. Breiland then scored 26 seconds into the third period from freshman defenseman Tori Demarais on a power play, making it 4-1. Then, at the 6:42 and 9:41 marks Breiland added her 13th and 14th goals of the season with Schmitz assisting on both.

    Pirate eighth grader Jayden Allrich recorded her first career goal with 6:43 remaining in the third period on assists from junior Claire Conati and Demarais.
     
    Eveleth-Gilbert's Kora Bonicatto recorded 42 saves.
