  • Men's basketball: Niang’s double-double leads UMC over Finlandia 81-75

  • Minnesota, Crookston senior forward Abdou Niang recorded a double-double with 11 points and 22 rebounds, tying the school record for most boards in a game, to lead the Golden Eagles Thursday in an 81-75 win over Finlandia in Hancock, Mich.
     
    Junior Brandon Burns led UMC with 18 points and senior points guard Almir Krdzalic had 13 points and three assists. Senior shooting guard Justin Rake posted 12 points and nine rebounds, while junior James Sparkman had nine points and ten rebounds.
     
    Finlandia was led by Jon Moore with 17 points, four assists, four blocks and four steals. Jarmond Swartzen added 14 points.
     
    Minnesota, Crookston led 46-42 at the half and outscored Finlandia in the second half 35-33.
     
    The Golden Eagles shot 46.7 percent from the field but were just 1 of 11 on three pointers.
     
    With Finlandia leading 10-4 early in the contest when UMC went on a 13-0 run over three minutes. Later in the first half, an 8-0 run by the Golden Eagles put them up 34-21 with six minutes left.
     
    Finlandia finished the first half with a 9-2 run, cutting the deficit to four points at halftime.
     
    Minnesota, Crookston held onto its lead for the entire second half and with about five minutes left, leading by just two at 66-64, went on an 8-0 run over about three minutes.
     
    The Golden Eagles, now 2-0 on the season, will travel to Mayville State Tuesday, Nov. 20 before hosting Crown College Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 6 p.m.
