U of M, Crookston Head Women's Basketball Coach Mike Roysland has announced the signing of Selina Barnes of Colorado Springs, Colo., to a National Letter of Intent. She will begin playing during the 2013-14 basketball season.
All signees are contingent upon admission to UMC and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Barnes is a 5-foot-4 point guard that currently competes for Sierra High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. Barnes averaged 9.8 points, 4.4 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game as a junior for the Stallions. She helped lead her team to a 17-9 record last season helping the Stallions advance to the Sweet 16 of the Colorado High School Athletic Association 4A State Tournament. Barnes was a Colorado Springs Metro League 4A All-League First Team selection as a junior. As a sophomore, she earned CSML 4A All-League Second Team honors while she was a CSML 4A All-League Honorable Mention pick as a freshman. She earned team Most Valuable Player accolades for the Stallions as a sophomore and junior. In addition, she earned Offensive Player of the Year honors for the team as a sophomore. Off the court, Barnes has been a National Honor Society member for three years, has been on the honor roll every semester of her high school career and has been her class president since her freshman year at Sierra High School. She is currently serving as the student body president at her high school.
"We are very excited to bring in a point guard of Selina's caliber," Roysland said. "She has the full package. Selina is very explosive off the dribble, has great vision, and can attack the rim with ease. Her ability to score in open space along with her athleticism will be fun to watch."
Barnes was born March 24, 1995. She is the daughter of Alice and Maurice Barnes. Barnes intends to major in health science at UMC.
