OBITUARY: Harold 'H.D.' Ross
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
Harold Dale “H.D.” Ross, 71, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, October 26, 2012, at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, MN, with his loving wife, Joanne, by his side. Harold was born on September 15, 1941 in Crookston, MN. Harold’s parents, Walter and Bertha Ross, raised him in Fisher, MN, and he graduated from Fisher High School with the Class of 1959. Harold next attended Bemidji (MN) State College and later moved to California to work for Shasta Trailers. In 1962 he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. Following his honorable discharge in 1964 he returned to Crookston to farm with his father, and joined the Army National Guard, from which he was honorably discharged in 1965. Upon his return from Germany Harold met Joanne Westman, and the two were united in marriage on November 20, 1965 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston. At this time, Harold and Joanne started their own farming operation. Their union was blessed with three children: Joy Ann, Tyler, and Carter, whom he was very proud of. Joy Ann is employed as a nurse, Tyler was mentored by his father and is a farmer, while Carter is a teacher. Though he retired from farming several years ago, he continued to be actively involved in helping with the farming operation.
Harold was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fisher for many years before joining Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston, where he served on many boards. He was also a member of Fisher’s Theodore Stalemo American Legion Post and a member of the Color Guard for 40 years. Harold served on several sugar beet boards, including those of the Crookston Truck Haul; the Red River Valley Sugar Beet Growers Association; the American Crystal Sugar Company, where he served for twelve years as a director for the Crookston Factory; and the Crookston Grain Elevator Board. Harold was active in the building of the Ampride Convenience store with Crookston Fuel. He also served on the Red River Valley Wintershows Building Board. Harold enjoyed traveling to meetings with his fellow farmers, and having breakfast every morning at the Irishman’s Shanty in Crookston to ‘hash over’ the coming day. Sadly, Harold was diagnosed with dementia and had been unable to go those breakfasts for the past two years. In 2011 he moved to the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine. May God bless the memory of H.D. Ross.
Harold will be sadly missed by his wife of almost 47 years, Joanne, of Crookston; their three children: Joy Ann Ross of Wahpeton, North Dakota, Tyler Ross of Crookston, and Carter Ross of Las Vegas, Nevada. Also missing Harold are his siblings: Armin (Kathy) Ross of Erskine, MN, Lyle (Alice) Ross of Coon Rapids, MN, Betty (Marlin) Radi of Seal Beach, California, and Don (Joann) Kesler of Kandiyohi, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Bertha Ross; a sister, Rosemary (Wagner) Morken; and two brothers, Duane Wagner and Gerald Wagner.
A memorial service celebrating Harold’s life will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN, with The Rev. Steve Bohler, officiating. A time to greet the family will be held at the Church for one hour prior to the funeral. Military Honors will be provided by Theodore Stalemo American Legion Post #242 of Fisher. Memorials may given in Harold’s name to the Pioneer Memorial Care Center, 23028 347th Street SE, Erskine, MN 56535 or to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 217 S. Broadway, Crookston, MN 56716.
