The Golden Eagles placed second both days behind the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities but pulled big scores overall with 34 points Saturday and 38 Sunday.
The U of M, Crookston hunt seat equestrian team opened up the 2012-13 show season last weekend with a stellar performance at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. The Golden Eagles placed second both days behind the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities but pulled big scores overall with 34 points Saturday and 38 Sunday. Universities competing at the show were University of Wisconsin, River Falls, Ellsworth Community College, North Dakota State University, University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Cloud State University, Carleton College and University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
"I am very happy with how well the team started off the season and expect to see them continue to get better and better as the season progresses," said head coach Brooke Leininger. "The teamwork, the commitment and the skill that the hunt seat team showed this past weekend was fantastic."
Saturday's competition started off with big victories in Equitation over Fences, with wins from Jessica Charles (Sr., Belgrade Lakes, Maine) and Angela Peterson (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) in the Intermediate Division. Denise Thompson (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) captured a win in the Novice Division.
"I was thrilled to see such big wins over fences, because this has been our weak point in past years," said Leininger.
Chelsea Roetman (Jr., Owatonna, Minn.) and Emily Steeley (Fr., Portsmouth, R.I.) each placed second in Open Equitation on the Flat in their respective sections Saturday. Charles took second in Intermediate Equitation on the Flat to go along with her win over the fences which tied her for the High Point Rider title on the day. She continued her winning with a victory in Open Equitation on the Flat Sunday.
Amanda Overman (Jr., Lindenhurst, Ill.) took third in Novice Equitation on the Flat Saturday and second Sunday. Peterson was second in Sunday's Intermediate Equitation on the Flat and Denise Thompson won Novice Equitation on the Flat.
In Walk Trot Canter, Rebekah Landmark (Fr., Montevideo, Minn.) took third in her section both days. Katherine Berg (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.) was second Saturday followed by a big victory in Sunday's show. Sam Kramer (So., Corcoran, Minn.) won her section Saturday while Mikala Guidinger (So., Rochester, Minn.) had a big comeback victory in her section Sunday. Rachel Gaardsmoe (Fr., Petaluma, Calif.) came away with a big win in her section Sunday, as well. Paige Clark (Fr., Andover, Minn.), normally a competitor for the UMC Western Equestrian team, stepped up to fill her division late and came away with a second-place finish in Walk Trot Canter both days.
