  •     It’s about that time of year again, the most wonderful time of the year, and I’m not talking about Christmas. That’s right, it’s basketball season. With the college and NBA seasons already kicking off their seasons, and the high school season right around the corner, basketball fans, myself included, are on cloud nine right now, thinking about getting to watch their teams play in the following months leading up to March where everything will be put to the test.
If you ask any diehard basketball fan when the first time they picked up a basketball was, they could probably tell you exactly where and how old they were at that moment. Whether it’s at the first form of organized basketball or when dad takes you out to the driveway for the first time showing you how to shoot a ball, it’s a memorable time in not only every player’s life, but also anyone’s who has ever loved the game. The majority of those fans would also be able to tell you which basketball star they idolized as a child, and which team they were always rooting for to come out on top come playoffs. Growing up watching and playing the game of basketball is a great way to spend your childhood, something that I’ve been privileged to do.
So what is it that makes the game of basketball so lovable? As far as playing the sport, the accessibility of the game is very handy. All you need is a hoop and a ball and you’ve got yourself long-lasting entertainment, for either yourself, you and a friend or a group of people. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing in a gym or on a slab of concrete down at the park, basketball is basketball no matter where you are.
Not to downgrade playing a game of freestyle basketball, but there’s something about the feeling you get from stepping onto your home court with your teammates and playing in a gym full with people from your community cheering you on. Not much of anything that I’ve experienced in my life can compare to the ambiance of playing a competitive game of basketball. Playing a close game against your rivals that comes down to a game winning shot,  or hearing your fan section roar in your support in a playoff game, it’s hard to match the emotions of those built up in games like that.  I’ve played many of these games, and I know that when I play my last one next March, regardless of how our high school team ends the season, I will sob like a baby. This is because of the memories and relationships I have gained from the game of basketball, one that, as cliché as this sounds, have made me the person that I am today.
Page 2 of 2 -     Like playing basketball, watching the sport is also pretty unbeatable in many aspects. Ever since Michael Jordan introduced his new style of the game including his forever famous Air Jordan dunks, the game’s popularity has risen gaining fans who want to watch their team compete for a title during March Madness, which we all know as the time where anything can happen.
Watching a talented player, whether it be an NBA, college or high school player play the game of basketball, making decisions under pressure and executing plays when it comes down to the wire, or when your team makes the buzzer beater shot to win the game, that’s what draws us to the game of basketball.
It’s finally here basketball fans, the time of the year we’ve all been waiting for, a chance to play or watch the game we live for.
I’m not sure what the outcome of the 2012-2013 season will be, all I know is that I’m going to enjoy every moment of playing and watching the sport that will always be my first love, basketball.
