  • The No. 3 seeded Pirates made quick work of the Roseau Rams, seeded No. 6, Tuesday at Choice Health & Fitness in Grand Forks with a 6-1 victory, advancing to the semifinals of the Section 8A Team Tournament.

In the semifinals Friday, Crookston will face No. 2 seed Pequot Lakes at approximately 10:30 a.m. at Choice Health & Fitness. No. 1 Staples-Motley and No. 4 Park Rapids will square off at 9 a.m. with the finals set for about noon.

"After we got into the matches we started playing our best tennis," Pirate Head Coach Mike Geffre said. "We were a little nervous early. Roseau played really well in the match; they came ready to compete. It took us a while to adjust to what they were doing."

Both Pirate one singles and one doubles won in straight sets.

"Obviously our one singles and one doubles won quite easily," Geffre noted. "It seemed like they were the least nervous. They all came out and really got after it. Those are our more experienced kids too. Every one of them probably is playing in their third section tournament."

Pirate seventh grader Ally Tiedemann pulled out a three-set win after dropping the first set.

"Ally was not hitting the ball early in the match," said Geffre. "In the second and third sets she started hitting through the ball and made some adjustments to finish off her match."

Coach Geffre said the remaining four teams left in the section tournament are all evenly matched.

"I think the rest of the matches will all be 4-3," he said. "Nobody is going to dominate. The kids have to come ready to play. We have a 25 percent chance. I told the kids, 'win your next match you'll have 50 percent chance.' These are all pretty close teams. It can be anyone's section at this point."
