  • A second teacher was investigated for alleged sexual misconduct with a student four years ago at Shattuck-St. Mary's prep school in southern Minnesota, police and the school confirmed Tuesday.
Faribault Police Chief Don Gudmundson said his department looked into a case involving a former teacher and coach at Shattuck-St. Mary's and a female exchange student in 2008. But the case ended when the teacher committed suicide in his campus apartment that December, the Star Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/Ru2IIc).
In a statement Tuesday, Shattuck-St. Mary's said it immediately put in place a plan to remove the teacher from the school the day it received the allegation, but he died that evening.
"At the scene of the suicide, the allegations in this matter were fully and immediately disclosed to the investigating officers," the school said, noting that within two days, the school conducted town hall meetings "in which the allegations were disclosed and discussed openly as violation of trust and contrary to the policies and culture of the school."
Details of the 2008 case emerged the day after another former teacher, Lynn Seibel, was charged with sexual misconduct involving six teenage boys at the school between 1999 and 2003. He taught drama.
The school confirmed Monday that it received a complaint about Seibel in 2001, but said its investigation found the complaint to be groundless. The school maintains that it told police and county social services about the allegation against Seibel, but police said they have no records of being informed.
The school said it fired Seibel in 2003, after finding pornography on his school-issued computer.
Seibel, 70, is being held in a Los Angeles jail in an unrelated case. He does not have an attorney in the Minnesota case, and his Los Angeles public defender didn't return a phone call for comment late Tuesday.
