  •     Marc DeMers, who's challenging first-term Republican State Rep. Deb Kiel of Crookston in Minnesota House District 1B this election, will be in Crookston on Thursday. He'll be at RBJ's Restaurant from 3 to 4:30 p.m. to meet and chat with anyone who feels like stopping by.
DeMers, who sits on the East Grand Forks City Council, will be accompanied on his visit by fellow EGF council member Mike Pokrzywinski, a Crookston native. The two will visit with law enforcement officials in the morning, appear on KROX's Valley Talk and have lunch at Happy Joe's during their day-long swing through Crookston.
“My goal is not only to further introduce myself to the people of Crookston, but also for me to get a more complete understanding of Crookston’s greatest asset, its residents," DeMers said.
Pokrzywinski told the Times that he has no official capacity in DeMers' campaign, but that when mailings sponsored not by Kiel herself other Republican-supporting groups started showing up in his mailbox that were critical of several of DeMers' votes on the East Grand Forks council, "I told Marc I'd help him in any way I could in Crookston, my hometown," Pokrzywinski said. "I am more than happy to associate my name with him if it helps him at all in the eyes of Crookston voters.
"I have deep roots in Crookston with family still there and my business taking me their every week," Pokrzywinski continued, "so I think I'm in a good position to let Crookston residents know what kind of man Marc is."
Pokrzywinski said all of the outside money from both parties targeted at the House 1B race is an indication of how important both Democratic and Republican interests think the Minnesota House seat is.
"Those mailings targeting Marc's voting record, his votes are exactly the same as mine and they were unanimous on the city council," Pokrzywinski said. "Kiel's party is attacking us on our votes to deal with budget shortfalls that were caused by votes in the legislature. We're not happy about these attacks. Marc's vote is the same as mine and we're not going to turn the American dream into a nightmare like they're claiming."
