  • Pirate sophomore outside hitter Amber Froeber posted 17 kills and seven blocks and junior outside hitter Kaylee Desrosier had a triple-double to lead the Pirates to an exciting 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11) win over the Climax/Fisher Knights Monday in Crookston.

"We generally got off to some good starts," Pirate Head Coach Lon Boike said after the win. "We had trouble finishing games. Taylor Altepeter hurt us, especially in game four. We had trouble with her on the outside. We made some adjustments and switched some people around and we slowed her down a little bit."

Froeber closed out the fifth game for the Pirates with two kills in the final five points and, on match point, Froeber punched the ball over to give the Pirates the victory.

Desrosier finished with 12 kills, 16 assists and 12 digs.

"We had four girls that really had great nights," Coach Boike said. "Brooke Heggie, Amber Froeber, Kaylee Desrosier and Emily Samuelson, those four in particular had big nights. We were really balanced tonight though."

Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Heggie tallied 16 kills in her season debut and junior middle hitter Emily Samuelson had 14 kills.

Heggie also added six blocks and three aces.

"Brooke Heggie is a huge asset," said Coach Boike. "It was nice to put her back in the lineup. They did not have many answers for her tonight."

Senior libero Taylor Demarais posted 26 digs, while senior setter Katie Davidson had 18 assists and four digs. Senior outside hitter Kari Harter had 11 digs.

In game one, Climax/Fisher used a 4-0 run to take an 18-12 lead but the Pirates answered with a 13-3 run, winning the game 25-21.

With Crookston leading 21-16 in game two, the Knights went on a 9-2 run to finish out the 25-23 win, tying the match.

The Pirates jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead in game three and didn't trail at any point on their way to a 25-20 win.

Game four was a nail-biter until the end with neither team holding a lead of more than three. The Pirates tied the game at 22-22 when the Knights took three of the final four points to force the fifth game with a 25-23 win.

Crookston got out to a 4-1 lead in game five but Climax/Fisher quickly closed the gap and held a 10-9 lead before Froeber and the Pirates took over and won six of the final seven points for the 15-11 victory.

The Pirates improve to 5-12 on the season. They will travel to Warren today to face the Warren-Alvarado-Oslo Ponies. On Thursday, the Pirates host Red Lake County Central on senior night.

"This has to be a confidence builder," said Coach Boike of Monday's win. "We have been struggling lately, but we have a chance to win these matches if we keep it going. We'll be OK by the end of the week."

The Climax/Fisher Knights fall to 5-12-3 and will travel to Lake Park today to face Lake Park-Audubon.
