  • Nick Genereux shot his first black bear Sunday evening five miles east of Crookston. As he explained, his parents, Dave and Linnea, were returning to town from the lake when they spotted the bear on a farmer's land. They called Nick and got permission from the land owner, who they're acquainted with, to hunt the bear.
Nick had to coax it out of a corn field and into a clear range before he could fire. The bear was only about 40 yards and running towards him when he shot it one time with his .270 Winchester short mag rifle. The bear weighed in at 405 lbs., 7'1" long from nose to tail, and a 55" belly. The green score on the skull is 19 6/8", which Nick said will easily surpasses the state record book minimum of 18" and would put it fairly high on the list from Polk County.
He plans on doing a full life-size mount at his award-winning taxidermy shop, Outdoor Addictions Taxidermy in Crookston.
